Darius Goes West

This is the story of a 15-year old boy that has DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) who decides he wants his wheelchair pimped by MTV’s Pimp My Ride. To have a chance at this ideal, he and his college friends must travel across the country from Athens, Georgia to Los Angeles, California. On the way, the boys share many laughs and profound experiences. This includes Darius’ first ride in a boat, swim in the ocean, and his first time as a celebrity.

Only one problem with this movie, it was too good! Definitely one to see over and over. A story of this much depth told by a bunch of whacked-out college students is incredible. I’ve never seen a more hopeful, heartfelt, moving film such as this one. It compares to nothing and is so sincere. It’s amazing!

There are a few things that could be changed. In the movie they decided to put some clips of different people with DMD. It’s understandable why they did it, but it gets repetitive and it’s really not necessary. There are also a few parts where they have everything that people are saying in the background and it sounds like he’s dying because of the way it’s edited. And it’s also kind of creepy.

But there are so many crazy, funny, “guy” scenes where they’re all just acting completely insane. There’s one scene (which is one of my favorites) where everyone is gathered at the edge of the Grand Canyon, Darius‚ number one travel destination. Darius is talking about being king of the world and how incredible and huge it is and everyone should go there. I shivered through the whole thing. How do you capture those moments that way? How did they do that?
