Working at THE INDEPENDENT

Hey World! It is Griff.

Sorry I’ve been on vacation, but now I have some time to write this up. Well, from December 14-21 our school SBMS had a project called Career Study Week. Basically you are an intern for a week at a job you choose. I didn’t have a clue of where to work until my dad said that we had hook-ups to The Independent, if you don’t know what The Independent is it is one of the Big Santa Barbara Newspapers.

I worked with Alex Abatie, the design director, and a friend of our family. I learned the tricks of the trade, from dropping files, to calling art galleries for listings. Dropping files is basically copying and pasting, but it is fun. Sure maybe it doesn’t sound like fun, but it was great. You’re probably thinking, what does this boy do, copy and paste for fun? Well, sure that was good compared to some other stuff I had to do. The worst was helping add all the receipts to see how much money they had spent throughout the year. It took about 2 and a half hours, and finally after checking it over three times, and figuring out the mistake I made, it was done. But even the worst was good, so nothing was bad. Plus, I got free food and soda :).

Overall, I learned that work was hard, and sometimes not fun, but that is what working people have to deal with. When it is not fun, find something fun in it.

Thank you all, Independent Staff, for such a great and friendly environment, and free soda.
