Why educate the girls? How to educate the girls? Stones make schools, but what makes teachers?

Lili and Emily take off their shoes, sit down on the floor, and share three cups of tea with peacemaker, Greg Mortenson author of New York Times' Bestsellers Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools.

Also see "A Rap for Greg" composed and performed by Santa Barbara Middle School resident rapper Mark G.

The TEEN PRESS made a long visit to Alameda Park to talk with organizers, presenters, and other visitors about what they do to "go green."

Here we talk with students from Santa Barbara Middle School who are part of the "Bike Monkey" program, who volunteered to work with Bici Centro to help fix and tune bikes for the day, as well as a Santa Barbara High School student who volunteers with Heifer International to help feed the world.

Also check out our visits with James & Suzy Cameron, Mayor Helene Schneider, Community Environmental Council's Executive Director Dave Davis, Earth Day Exhibitors, Attendees on Going Green, and Summer Solstice @ Earth Day.

Also check out our interviews with past Environmental Heros JACK JOHNSON and Lieutenant Governor JOHN GARAMENDI...

SBMS Teen Press Team Members Amanda, Emily, Lia, Lili, and Marandah are "diving into community" to bring you news, performances, personalities, and events. Keep checking back for their latest findings.

An Afternoon with American Legend KEN BURNS

In celebration of UCSB Arts & Lectures’ 50th Anniversary, Ken Burns came to Santa Barbara. With the help of the Orfalea Foundations, Ken visited with a small and very interested group of students from Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, and San Marcos High School. After an enthusiastic question and answer session, Ken spent some time with Teen Press reporters Emily and Lili. Filming the interview were SBMS alums, Ian Wexler and Jacob Seigel-Boettner. Ken recognized Jacob from their meeting at Thomas Jefferson’s house on the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Celebration when Jacob was in middle school. Ken wished he could spend more time with us, but was off to speak at the Arts & Lectures fundraiser and gala held Monday night at the Coral Casino.

Richard Wilke’s whimsical woodblock prints adorn the walls of Santa Barbara Frame Shop and Gallery in the month of May. Amanda and Lili visit with Richard at the opening.

A Visit with Max, Just Back from the Gulf

The Santa Barbara Middle School Teen Press grabbed a timely visit with young diver and filmmaker, Max deGruy. Max just returned from a week in the gulf with his famous underwater filmmaker dad, Mike deGruy. Mike is there documenting perhaps the worst environmental disaster in our history. Sit down with Emily, Lili and Max and find out what the spill looked like, smelled like, felt like and even tasted like.

Stay tuned for the SBMS Teen Press' ongoing coverage over the coming months, and in the mean time get down to West Beach Sunday, June 27th for Stand in the Sand. From 1 to 3 Sunday afternoon, Santa Barbarans will be showing their support for all the people and life affected by the spill. If any community should understand, Santa Barbara should.

"El Puente / The Bridge" Bolivia Expedition members prepare to depart for their service mission from the Santa Barbara Airport. Find out about the history of "Walk For A Reason" and the Rio Bene Health Project, run by Netzer-Brady International (with the help of Direct Relief International). For more information visit netzerbrady.org.

In this excerpt, Sophia, Heather and Christina talk about their goals & preparation for the journey, including the fundraising they did. Follow the expedition's progress at elpuente2010.blogspot.com.
