…And All That Jazz!

Marandah and Mary

On Saturday, November 1, we attended a moving performance by Charlie Haden and the Liberation Orchestra at the beautiful Lobero Theater. With Charlie’s first words not about music, but about the presidential election, we could tell the group was very politically active and democratic. This edge to the concert put a humorous and serious spin on what was said to be simply a jazz performance, a performance that proved to be the opposite of simple…

With their orchestra of highly talented musicians, they took many familiar American melodies places we never thought they would go. Still whether it was trombonist Curtis Fowlikes and tuba player Joe Daley doing “Amazing Grace”, saxophonists transforming “America the Beautiful”, trumpet players doing “This is Not America” or Charlie himself. They also played many magnificent songs from their album Not in Our Name. Every piece was filled with emotion and heart.

To conclude, Charlie Haden and Liberation Orchestra were a hit. From his hilarious political comments to their talented songs, we were sincerely entertained.
